2/13 Snowshoe the Shannon Trail

Friday, February 13th10:30 am – 12:30 pm meet at Found Lake Rd. trailhead parking lot

This time we’re heading up into the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest to do some snowshoeing north of St. Germain.  I was up there a week ago and it is still as nice as it always is.  We’ll  start off at the trailhead and work our way  through the mixed woodland of oak, aspen and maple to the shore of Shannon Lake.  Shannon is a pretty 35 acres  seepage lake with a depth of 30 feet. It is also a wilderness lake which makes it special with no houses or piers. Even though the Shannon Trail system covers 7 miles, our snowshoe will cover 2.11 miles.  The trail around the lake, which isn’t very hilly,  stays relatively close to the lake so you get some nice winter views.  Looking ahead at the weather forecast for the 13th, it is supposed to be in the high 20’s.  So dress for the weather, bring a snack/water, snowshoes, and a smile. No state trail pass or park sticker is required.    For those that want to, we could stop in St. Germain after the event for something to eat/drink and do some more socializing.

Direction from Rhinelander: (55 Min.)  Take Hwy 17 north to Eagle River.  Turn left on Hwy 70 to St.Germain.  At the intersection of Hwy 70 and Hwy 155 (Subway on your right) go straight on Hwy 155.  Several miles there will be a sweeping curve to the left, but you need to go straight on to Lost Lake Drive. Take your first right, Found Lake Rd., and follow it all the way to the Shannon Lake Trailhead parking lot.

A donation of $5.00 per event is requested for non-NPT members which can be paid at the event.  Membership for NPT is $10.00/year.  To become a NPT member go to northernpaddleandtrail.org and click in the upper right hand corner and find membership. RSVP at jayjoppa1950@gmail.com  or  715-499-1022  or go to meetup.com/northern-paddle-trail and click on Attend.

Hope you can join us on the trail.  –  J
