Saturday, June 27th, 9:45 am -3:30 pm. Paddle Julia Creek in the Three Lakes area, Meet at the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce, 1704 Superior St., Three Lakes, WI. Caravan will leave the Chamber at 10:00 am to the put-in. on Julia Lake
Larry Zibell, who is hosting this event, has an interest in the geological and human history of this area around his home on Virgin Lake. He knows the area well and would like to share it with you. This adventure includes all downstream paddling with a slight current. You will find some very pretty scenery on this small creek which passes through an undeveloped landscape. Even though this looks pretty wild, there is virtually no public land on the creek. While we are paddling, Larry will have written GPS coordinates for us to stop at and learn about the historical interest for that spot. The shuttling of vehicles and determining a lunch spot will be discussed at the Chamber. . Bring snacks, lunch, water and appropriate clothing and footwear. A PFD is required. From the put-in we will paddle the shoreline of Julia Lake up to the start of Julia Creek and then paddle to Virgin Lake. While on Virgin we can visit Pine Island which has had a nesting pair of bald eagles for over 20 years. Paddling to the southern end of Virgin Lake, we will re-enter Julia Creek and paddle ourselves into Whitefish Lake. Paddling along the shoreline of Whitefish we will find our way into the Thoroughfare at the southern end of the lake. Approximately a half mile downstream after entering the Thoroughfare, we will arrive at the Nat’l Forest Boat Landing (take-out) at the end of Frogsong Landing Road. Directions from Menards in Rhinelander: (22 min, 19 miles) Travel north on Hwy 17 to Sugar Camp. Turn right on Hwy A to Three Lakes. At the stop sign, drive straight into downtown and park at the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce (1704 Superior Street, across the road from St. Theresa Catholic Church) where Larry will meet you. Hope you can paddle with us on this adventure. – J
