6/30 Paddle Wind Pudding Lake, State Natural Area, Oneida County

Tuesday, June 30, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Paddle Wind Pudding Lake, State Natural Area, Oneida County Meet at put-in boat landing.

You’re invited to paddle with other NPT paddle enthusiasts to one of Wisconsin’s 698 designated state natural areas (SNA).  These protected areas are managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ; this network (SNA) encompasses nearly 400,000 acres of protected land across the state. The program focuses on preserving biological diversity, protecting endangered or threatened species, and serving as natural benchmarks for scientific research.  Wind Pudding was designated a SNA in 1983.

The lake’s 180 acres is divided into two basins separated by floating bogs and a labyrinth of different channels lined with waterlilies and other aquatic vegetation.   How it gots its name, I have no idea.   Even though it has a strange name it is a great place to paddle a kayak or canoe.   Wind Pudding is located southeast of the town of Lake Tomahawk off of West Bluebird Road.  Turn on Bass Rd and follow the new gravel road down to the put-in.  The road is really good, until almost to the landing.  A vehicle with high clearance will not have a problem and can drive right down.  If you don’t want to drive all the way down, park in the grassy area where the gravel ends and put your boat in the back of my truck and I will take your boat and gear down. Directions from Rhinelander: App. 35 min, 20 miles)   Take Hwy 47 north, turn left on Killdeer Road to West

Blue Bird Road. Turn left on West Blue Bird for a few miles to Bass Road (gravel) on your left. put-in boat landing 45.759469, -89.624322 Google may take you on Fawn Lake Road. Do not try to get on the lake off of Fawn Lake road, search West Blue Bird Road.    A wearable PFD is required.  Hope you can paddle with us on this adventure. –  J
